Did you know that Trinity River Baptist Association contributes financially to three community ministries in our area?  When your church sends your missions gift to TRBA each month, you are sharing in these ministries and the people they help.  During June I visited each of them to find out more about what they are doing for the Kingdom.

The Pregnancy Care Center, 303 S. Winfree in Dayton, provides pregnancy test confirmation, counseling, GED tutoring, parenting and life skills classes, and post-abortion counseling to young women in our area.  They also provide one-on-one mentoring.
Shiloh Ministries, on the northeast corner of the intersection of 770 and 563 in south Liberty County, specializes in ministry to men who are battling drug addiction.
House of Destiny, in Votaw in north Hardin County, offers a similar recovery program for women.
Both Shiloh and House of Destiny are resident programs.  Shiloh requires a one-year commitment; House of Destiny requires nine months but is working toward extending it to a year.
Men and women voluntarily check themselves into these programs when they find themselves at the end of their ropes.  Both programs stress the importance of developing a real and intimate relationship with God through intense daily Bible study and prayer.
It seems to work.  Both programs have seen many turned around as the Lord worked in their lives.
As I reflected on those two recovery programs, I wondered, “If disconnecting from distractions and focusing on connecting intimately with God can turn a drug addict around in a year or less, what could that kind of focus do for me, for each of us?  Must we wait until we hit bottom to turn to Jesus and make Him the center of our lives?  What if, right now, wherever we are spiritually, we turned away from whatever is distracting us from Jesus and did whatever it takes to really get to know Him in a real and personal way?”
I’m glad we have the opportunity to partner with these ministries to help some of the hurting men and women in our community and point them to Jesus as the only solution they have and the only solution they need.

Donna Kay and I have joined First Liberty.  We are still enjoying getting into each of our 41 churches.  On June 22, for example, we were at Grace Community where I preached and Donna Kay sang.  As an added bonus, they let me play bass!  What a joy it is to worship and fellowship with all of you here in TRBA.
